A tungsten ring is a common mens wedding band. Tungsten is reputed for its remarkable durability. Even the strongest of things needs occasional care and cleaning though. Here’s a look at how to go about cleaning a tungsten wedding band.
Preparation
There are a few things that you need before you can begin. The list is pretty small though. Here is everything;
- A cotton cloth
- Warm water
- Hand soap, or a mild detergent
- Cotton swabs
- A toothbrush
Solution
You want to start by mixing together a solution to wash the tungsten wedding ring in. The good news is that it’s a really simple mix. All you need is to mix warm water and mild soap. Regular cleaning soap is a good. You should also avoid other cleaning products because the chemicals in them, ammonia etc., can do some damage to tungsten wedding bands.
Lather and Clean
Use the cotton cloth to lather the solution on to the outside of the tungsten ring. The first step of cleaning the ring itself is to focus on cleaning the outside. Because tungsten is tough you can scrub as roughly as you have to and get rid of that pesky dirt. When you’ve cleaned off the dirt you can use cotton swabs and a toothbrush for more precise cleaning on the inside of the ring and around gems and other decorations. If your tungsten ring is a pretty intricate one you can just put it in the solution and let it soak and loosen the dirt.
Rinse
When you’re satisfied with how clean the ring is just rinse it by using warm water to get rid of any excess solution. You can use a cotton cloth (a clean one of course!) to dry the ring off before putting it back on.
Tungsten Ring Care
There are some things you can do to help keep your tungsten wedding ring clean. One important thing is to make sure that you clean it yourself. Most jewellers will offer to clean your jewellery using an ultrasonic cleaner but this kind of device can damage tungsten rings. If you insist on using one then ensure that your ring isn’t in there for more than one minute.
Avoid chemicals
Tungsten is very resistant to damage but it’s not invulnerable. It’s vulnerable to harsh chemicals. As such it’s worth cleaning it as soon as it comes into contact with bleach or another similar product. The water won’t damage it, but the bleach will, so get it off quickly.
No Diamonds!
Tungsten and diamond are two of the hardest materials around, especially when it comes to wedding bands. As a result diamond is one of the few things that can actually scratch and damage a tungsten ring. So keep it away from diamonds, and you should keep your mens wedding band quite safe.
